Employment and EI in the time of COVID-19

As COVID-19 continues to spread across Canada, businesses, and individuals are trying to work out what it means for them. It is becoming increasingly clear that we will be impacted by the changes imposed, which may lead to shutdowns or layoffs.

Fiscal Performance recently received an email from the Office of MP Diane Finley (Haldimand-Norfolk) that we thought was important to share, as it includes information from Service Canada regarding Records of Employment.
Today, Service Canada has confirmed to us that Records of Employment are still required to be provided by employers to their employees in all cases.

If a lay off is due to the economic fall-out/required closure of a business re COVID-19 then the reason will be shortage of work and in the comment section put due to COVID-19 economic impact.

If a person is leaving due to sickness/quarantine or self-quarantine due to direct exposure to a person with a positive test result the process is a little different.

For a person that has COVID-19 the reason would be sickness and in the comment section it would be due to COVID-19 sickness and subsequent quarantine

For a person going into self quarantine, the reason would be sickness and the comment would be employee now in self quarantine due to contact with COVID-19

NOTE A person applying for sick benefit EI based on self quarantine then has to call into EI to declare who it is that they have had contact with that has the positive COVID-19 test result

There is some information on the Prime Minister’s website under Support for workers that refers to “including the self-employed” and I have provided the link below.

Another site for your reference re: EI programs available is:

You should encourage as many people as possible to sign up for the CRA My Account so that they can access services such as obtaining copies of Notices of Assessment.

Additionally, please find below a link to the Government of Canada’s website page for: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) – Employment and Social Development Canada.

Here you will find the available ways to apply for EI and how to proceed, depending on your circumstances.

We will keep you updated with any information that we receive and that is vetted for accuracy.

Be safe.
